3 Ways to Clean Your Furnace
Your furnace works hard to generate heat and circulate warm, comforting air around your Joliet home. Just like any other part of your house, your furnace will get dusty and dirty over time; however, unlike your furniture or belongings, a heating system can be damaged by dust. A dirty furnace can lead to lower energy efficiency, higher bills, worn-out parts, and decreased indoor air quality. You can keep your furnace clean with the following tips from DuPree Heating & Air Conditioning:
1. Change the Filter
Inside your furnace is a porous screen called a filter. The filter removes dust and detritus from the air in your home. Eventually, the filter will get dirty and need to be replaced; otherwise, your home’s air quality will suffer, along with your furnace’s performance. To replace the filter, simply slide out the old filter and replace it with a fresh one from a hardware store.
2. Thoroughly Clean the Interior
The filter isn’t the only place where dust accumulates inside a furnace — the interior is just as susceptible. Most of this dust can be cleared away using a damp cloth and vacuum cleaner. Simply unscrew the front panel and replace it when you’re finished. Make sure to switch off the furnace via the breaker box before you begin. If you’re not comfortable cleaning the furnace yourself, we can help. Our technicians at DuPree Heating & Air Conditioning are available for Joliet furnace maintenance and repair.
3. Blow Dust Off the Igniter
Most modern furnace systems use a hot surface igniter instead of the old pilot lights and electronic igniters of the past. An excessive amount of dust on the igniter can cause it to fail or work improperly. Luckily, it’s fairly easy to clean the igniter; simply blow air on it through a plastic straw. Don’t touch it — it’s very hot!
